My hair is naturally a pretty boring, nondescript medium brown color, but I was blonde as a child. I'd like to go blonder (with the help of a professional), but I'm concerned that it might change how I'm treated.
I'm a pretty serious college student right now, and I don't want my professors, advisors, possible employers, etc. to stereotype me as a %26quot;dumb blonde.%26quot; I definitely don't believe in that stereotype, but I'm afraid that some people might buy into it.
So, what have your experiences been? How were you treated differently? Did you receive more attention? Was it positive or negative attention? How so? Any other advice?
Thanks so much for your help! For young women: Are you a natural brunette who dyed and/or highlighted her hair some shade of blonde?just embrace your natural beauty:)For young women: Are you a natural brunette who dyed and/or highlighted her hair some shade of blonde?Well, I'm a natural blonde, and about 9 months ago I dyed my hair very dark brown. I didn't really notice a difference in treatment, but when I asked some of my newer guys friends who had not known me as a blonde, whether or not they thought I should go back to natural, they told me that they automatically assume that brunettes are less ditzy, more down to earth, and less concerned with their appearances (which makes them %26quot;accidentally%26quot; more attractive). I asked them if that still applies to natural blondes, since it I had to pay more attention to my appearance with brown hair because I had to constantly dye the roots, and they said that it still does anyways.
But in the end, people will take you seriously as long as you take yourself seriously. Last month I dyed my hair back to my natural, and I am relieved that I don't have to worry about roots, and can just be happy with my hair the way it grows out my head.
Do what you want. If you act dumb, people will think you're stupid. If you take yourself seriously, then others will too. You only live once, so if highlights will make you happy, then by all means, do it.
