What is the process of legally changing your full name, not because of marraige?

Pretty much what I'm asking is where do you go to start the process of changing your name? I could only find information for changing your name due to marriage, but what do you do if you just don't like the name your parents gave you? I'm only seventeen and I know I have to wait until after I'm eighteen.What is the process of legally changing your full name, not because of marraige?I worked for the Courts, and we did name changes, and here is what you would do In California...might be slightly different in your state. you need to contact the Superior Court in your area, the Civil Division. They will have often times a %26quot;name change packet%26quot; that will include all the forms that you need to do this. You fill out the forms, pay the fee (there will be a fee, unless you qualify for a fee waiver), and the clerk will set a court date out about 6 weeks. Some courts dont even make you attend if no one objects to the name change. in California however, you must attend, and the judge usually signs it there on the spot. At least from what I have seen, you dont need to have some big explanation, just as long as no one objects. thats another thing, In California you have to publish in a court approved newspaper your proposed name change, and date of hearing. This usually can be a local small paper. Its not easy to change your name. Try looking on your Courts website.... they will most likely have the forms for you. If you tell me your state I can look them up for you, and send them....

The process is the same no matter why you want to change it. You fill out a form, go before a judge, he/she gives a decision (usually yes) and then you can change it on all legal documents like your drivers license.

The process is not %26quot;the same.%26quot;

Each state has its own laws that deal with name change. In some states it's a simple process you can do yourself while in others you need an attorney to petition the court where a judge will decide whether or not to allow you to make the change.
If you are a UK resident then you can change your name quite easily through Deed Poll, this allows you to contact all the 'persons' who have your data and they will change your name accordingly.

Having just checked as you are 17 you would be able to change it without parental consent.

It is similar in what it does to a marriage certificate - shows a legitimate and legally binding change of name. However changing it by Deed Poll allows you to change any aspect of your name not just your surname.

The lack of limitations on names has caused some amusement, an elderly man was arrested in a Father Christmas suit in mid December a few years ago. He was arrested for not providing his name - he was adamant that he was Father Christmas, a night in a cell later it was confirmed that he had by Deed Poll changed his name to Father Christmas, a subsequent case for false imprisonment later and the police were very apologetic.

So whatever your reasoning behind it, if your a UK resident you can pick any name you please.
